How to Choose an At-Home Facial Device: 5 Questions to Ask First

SKINFOUNDRY

Before comparing prices, ask five questions of any at-home facial device: what the full routine takes each week, what evidence supports the exact product, what supplies you will keep buying, how it is cleaned and stored, and what happens if it is not right for you. A device you understand and can keep using beats a stronger-sounding one you abandon.

Reviewed September 2026. SKINFOUNDRY makes SKINFOUNDRY Halo, and we use it below as a worked example. The same checklist works for any device on your shortlist.

  1. Will the full routine fit your week?

A short demonstration shows a product. It rarely shows the whole commitment. Look for the preparation before a session, the treatment itself, how often it is recommended and the cleaning afterwards. Check whether an advertised time describes one mode or a complete routine.

Worked example: SKINFOUNDRY Halo’s Essentials routine combines Clean, Import and Lifting. Each mode runs five minutes, so that is 15 treatment minutes, twice a week, plus preparation and care. Essentials does not include RF; the Full Treatment adds the two RF modes (Eye Care and Anti-aging) and runs about 25 minutes, once or twice a week. By comparison, NuFACE recommends five minutes a day, five days a week for its first 60 days, and CurrentBody states about 70 minutes for a full-face RF session once a week. See the complete SKINFOUNDRY Halo instructions.

Your question: Can I describe the whole routine, week by week, before I buy?

  1. What supports the claim about the exact product?

Technology names such as RF, microcurrent or LED are starting points. They do not tell you the settings of a particular device or prove an outcome for every product that uses them.

When a brand cites research, check what was tested: the finished product, a different device, the general technology, or an ingredient. Check the number of participants, the treatment period and what it was compared against. Some headline figures in this category come from questionnaires filled in minutes after a session, which measure impressions, not skin.

For before-and-after photos, look for a stated timeline, matched lighting and angle, and context about the rest of the person’s routine.

Your question: What does this evidence actually show, and what does it leave open?

  1. What will you need after the first purchase?

Check what is in the box, and separate a starter size from a full size. Then look at the supplies the instructions require every session.

Worked example: SKINFOUNDRY Halo is $395 and comes with a 30 ml Lumis starter. Full-size Lumis is 80 ml at $54.99, sold separately; check current availability before ordering. Unlike most conductive gels, which only help a device glide, Lumis is a treatment gel with five actives: niacinamide, tranexamic acid, peptides, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. For comparison, NuFACE’s Aqua Gel is $35 for 1.69 oz, about a month of daily use.

Be wary of any single refill interval. How long a gel lasts depends on the routine and how much you apply.

Your question: What is included now, and what will I buy later?

  1. How will you clean, charge and store it?

Read the care instructions before ordering: cleaning method, charging, storage and anything you must not use on it. Also check whether the device is corded or cordless, since that decides where you can use it.

Worked example: SKINFOUNDRY Halo is cordless and charges by USB-C. Switch it off before cleaning, wipe it with a damp towel or tissue, and store it somewhere cool and dry, away from children. The manufacturer advises against alcohol and other chemical cleaning liquids.

Your question: Do I understand the care as well as the treatment?

  1. What happens if it is not right for you?

Read the full return and warranty policies, not just the headline. Check when the return window starts, what condition and packaging are required, and whether shipping is refunded. A trial-period return and a warranty against faults do different jobs.

Worked example: SKINFOUNDRY Halo’s 90-Day Promise runs from delivery. The policy asks for the original packaging and included accessories; original shipping is not refunded unless the return is due to our error. The warranty is 1 year. NuFACE offers a 60-day money-back window and a 2-year warranty on Trinity+. Read our return policy and warranty in full.

Your question: Do I know the process, not just the promise?

Put the answers side by side

Write one sentence for each of the five questions, for each device you are considering, and put those sentences next to the price. For side-by-side examples, see NuFACE Trinity+ vs CurrentBody RF vs SKINFOUNDRY Halo and Does NuFACE really work?

Finally, read each product’s list of who should not use it. If a condition, medication or recent treatment makes you unsure, ask a clinician before using any energy-based device.

If NuFACE is on your shortlist, compare it with four NuFACE alternatives before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important thing to check before buying a facial device? The full weekly routine. A device only works if you keep using it, so choose a routine you can realistically follow.

Is a device with more technologies always better? No. Check which technologies run in each mode and what your main concern is. Microcurrent tones muscle; radiofrequency is used for the look of firmer skin.

Do I need a special gel? Use the gel each device’s maker recommends. A shared word like “conductive” does not make two gels interchangeable.

How long should I try a device before judging it? At least four weeks of consistent use. Choose a device whose return window gives you that time.

What does SKINFOUNDRY Halo cost to own? $395 for the device with a 30 ml Lumis starter, then Lumis 80 ml at $54.99 as needed.

SKINFOUNDRY Halo is a cosmetic device for home use. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Results vary. Competitor details are drawn from public product information as of September 2026 and may change. Brand names belong to their respective owners.
